Summary 3

Part 1: Summary

The writer Will Hutton, talks about how the EU could save the world from the greenhouse gas emissions. Many steps must be done by the EU’s countries, and also there are some problems.
The EU has made a commitment to tackle climate change and energy security. The EU is dedicated to use the renewable energy such as water, air and tidal power to reduce 20% of the carbon dioxide emissions by 2020 from their 1990 level. This commitment is followed by some actions to do. 2010 is the deadline for new power stations to have a carbon capture and storage technology. Car’s carbon emissions also will be reduced starting from the next year. Many problems will occur which are already expected. However, there is no choice; people must do it now because all these problems as scientific evidence are man-made. One of the main goals of the EU is to share the work to achieve something that would not be achieved by one country alone. The UN will meet in Indonesia to discuss how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in India, China and America. The EU will go ahead with no returns and if any country would like to reduce the emissions, they just have to follow them.

Part 2: Main Idea
The main idea is the initiative of the EU in how to save the world from the greenhouse gas emissions. The EU’s countries also had a commitment to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions and use renewable energy instead.

Part 3: Comment
- I think the article is well-organized because the writer divides the ideas into paragraphs.

- In my point of view, the article talks about an important issue that all countries must share the responsibility for the increased greenhouse gases.

- I would like to know more about the global warming and what personal initiatives could be done by people to stop the greenhouse gas emissions.

Task 4 - An Inconvenient Truth: Part 2

Brandon Fibbs,

The writer talks about Al Gore’s film which is An Inconvenient Truth. He supports the theory about the global warning relying on evidence and pictures provided by Al Gore in the film. He confirms that people are responsible for the climate change or the global warming. Everything is in change such as the sea levels are rising, the ice caps are melting, and the high temperatures in the last few years. All that is made by people and if we do not act, we will face many problems in the future. In the end of the review, he provides advice about how people may stop these changes and how we can return to the 1950’s weather.

Scott Nash,

However, there are many negative reviews about Al Gore’s film. One of them was written by Scott Nash. He thinks that Al Gore’s main idea or point is about his presidential candidature, rather than about global warming. He proves his thinking by the jokes that Al Gore made about Bush and other republicans. He says that Al Gore is emotionally manipulative. Scott thinks that some the pictures in the film were taken in the winter a few years ago and some in the summer, more recently.

In conclusion, I do not have enough knowledge and information about global warming to support Al Gore or Scott. However, Al Gore was more convincing than Scott because Gore supported his theory by pictures, charts and facts. Therefore, I would say Gore was right because these changes in temperatures, the rise of the sea levels and the melted ice caps were made by something or some people which Gore confirmed.
